Attendance Matters

As a parent or guardian of a High Schooler, you’ve probably noticed already that High School is often full of SO many more opportunities and challenges than your child faced in Elementary or Middle School. As our students begin to grow and mature as individuals, they are rewarded with countless more opportunities to diversify their interests and to practice figuring out what things interest them and are important to them as unique individuals.

Some of the best predictors of student success are engagement and attendance; simply showing up, being present, and ready at school to learn.  But before that can happen, students need to feel a sense of belonging. The idea that their presence is important here at Sheldon and that it matters to themselves and to others that they are here; the idea that they are a part of something larger than themselves.

As parents, our goal is to help our kids to find their belonging, find their people! Here at Sheldon we are fortunate to have many Affinity Groups, Clubs, Athletic Teams, and other Activities for our students to be a part of. If your student has not found where they click yet, we encourage them to dip their toes in and check out a group that sounds interesting to them.  Almost ALL of our Clubs and Affinity Groups don’t require any sort of membership or commitment. Visitors are often welcome to drop in and see what it’s about without any sort of expectation.

Visit the Sheldon website for a list of Clubs and Groups currently offered. This can also be found on the website under Student > Clubs & Groups. We update this page throughout the year as new groups form or evolve and who knows, maybe your student will want to start a club of their own!

Sheldon also offers a variety of athletic opportunities for students to get involved, stay active, and be part of a team. Additional information can be found on this form. You can also find this information on the Sheldon website under Departments > Athletics Department. Some of our sports practice throughout the year, so it’s never too early to start thinking ahead to the next season.

Some of our Activities like Marching Band, Color Guard, Musicals, Plays, and Student Government don’t fit the typical mold of Clubs or Athletic groups, but draw students in and give them a sense of belonging just the same. If there’s something your student is interested in, chances are we can find a group at Sheldon for them to meet up with like-minded students. If you’re unsure about what Sheldon has to offer, talk with a counselor or any of our caring staff members. They're always happy to listen, answer questions, and help point you in the right direction.
Our ongoing encouragement here at Sheldon is “1-1-1”  Every Student - at least 1 Club, Activity, and/or Sport - Every Year. The more your student is willing to try, the more rewarding their time here can be. Encourage and challenge your student to check out and try out at least one new group here at Sheldon.

Who knows, they may uncover a passion neither of you knew they had!
Go Irish!

Attendance

Requests to excuse absences must be received within 48 hours of the absence. If your student will miss 3 or more days of school due to a planned reason, use the Pre-arranged Absence Form available in the Attendance Office or on the Sheldon Website.
Our bell schedule makes attendance crucial for students' academic success and it's extremely important they attend bell to bell. We are seeing a number of students in the building, but not attending their whole classes. We want to remind you that we have multiple codes for attendance:
  • Arriving to class marked VL (very late)
  • Leaving early without permission, or asking to leave early for another reason
  • Missing class entirely
Attendance Reporting Form

ParentSquare

As a reminder, families can excuse their students' unplanned absences electronically as the district has moved attendance notifications to ParentSquare starting this school year.

Please note: You cannot reply directly to a notification email or text to excuse an absence. Family members must be registered in ParentSquare to send electronic attendance notes. To register, visit www.parentsquare.com/signin, and register using the email address or mobile phone number you provided your student's school.

ParentVue

As you look at your student’s attendance in ParentVue please ask your student about any attendance codes that may be coming up. If you need help signing up for ParentVue please do not hesitate to call Sheldon High School and we can help set that up for you.

Upcoming Student Survey

We are reaching out to let you know that we will soon be asking our sophomore and junior students to complete a brief survey about their interest in a potential Honors Program. We want to share the context for this survey so you understand why we are asking these questions and what we hope to learn.
Why We Are Exploring an Honors Program

Our neighboring school districts offer variations of an honors diploma or honors designation that students can earn by meeting certain academic, career, or community engagement standards. These distinctions can benefit students in meaningful ways, including:
• Increased competitiveness for merit-based scholarships
• Recognition on transcripts reviewed by colleges and universities
• Acknowledgment of career and technical skills for workforce entry
• A sense of accomplishment and motivation to stay engaged through senior year

We want to ensure that our students have access to the same recognition opportunities as students in surrounding districts — and that we build any program in a way that is fair, accessible, and reflective of the many paths our students take after graduation.
What the Survey Asks

The survey asks students about three possible honors pathways we are considering:
• Academic Achievement — focused on advanced coursework in core subjects
• Career Technical Education (CTE) — focused on career pathways and hands-on skills
• Community Service — focused on volunteering and civic engagement

Students will also be asked for their opinions on things like GPA expectations, attendance requirements, the number of additional credits or courses they could realistically take on, and what type of recognition would be most meaningful to them.
What This Survey Is — and Is Not

This survey is the first step in a longer process of listening and planning. No program has been decided upon. Student responses will be reviewed by a committee that will use the findings to develop a proposal. Any new program would go through appropriate review processes before being implemented.

The survey is anonymous and voluntary. Students will not be asked to provide their name, and completing the survey does not obligate them to participate in any program.

Questions? If you have questions about the survey or the Honors Program initiative, please do not hesitate to contact us. We value your partnership and look forward to sharing what we learn from our students.

Please fill out the Google Form(s) below to share your contact information so you can be in the loop. This event is not sponsored by Sheldon High School. For information, please contact the parent group directly.

Please fill out this form if you are a parent/guardian of a current senior (class of 2027)

Please fill out this form if you are a parent/guardian of a current junior (class of 2028).

You may also want to consider joining this group’s Facebook page for additional information and updates.

Interested in Volunteering here at Sheldon?

We'd love to have your help! Our ambition this year is to assemble a regularly updated list of volunteers to assist with day-to-day needs here at Sheldon. Some of these people are parents, former staff members, and/or community members, all people like you!

So far, we have been getting started on planning with groups in the area to find ways folks can help. These are team efforts: Food Boxes or Food Drives, Clothing Drives, Personal Care Drives, Collecting for Prize Wheel Prizes, Prepping Staff Meals for specific events, Clothing Sorting.

What we would like to offer soon are some smaller opportunities for Individual Volunteering. Folks like yourself that might have 1-3 hours at a time to come in and help in small assignments throughout the building. There are some areas which can ALWAYS use a regular, ongoing volunteer to help (such as the Front Office greeting and answering phones). There are sometimes opportunities for projects that might last a few days or a couple of weeks (such as in the College and Career Center organizing materials and signups for specific scholarship opportunities). We would love to have a people standing daily at the various points of entry to the building to welcome students as they come in for the day or back from Lunch.

Our goal is to welcome volunteers in various areas, even sometimes for just one or two days at a time to see if certain tasks are a good fit and try to pair people who are helpful with the students and staff who could really use the help.

All volunteers will need to go through our 4J Volunteer Application, so if you haven't already done so, that will be your first step. The application only takes about 5 minutes and the clearance usually takes about a week or two to get an email response back.

Once you have completed this step, please email Higgs_L@4j.lane.edu to express your interest in joining our building volunteer team. Please include any specific tasks or roles you are interested in pursuing. We can then arrange a brief Introduction to Volunteering meeting at Sheldon. These meetings typically last 30 minutes to an hour and can be scheduled individually or with a small group.

We are already slowly growing a small crew of recurring volunteers this year who've joined us on a regular basis. We can't wait to have more community support join us in our building!

Thank you all for your willingness to help our kids and GO IRISH!
