Attendance Matters

Did you know that Sheldon’s Homecoming Dance is coming up on October 17th? It may seem too far away to start thinking about, but did you know that participation in Extra-Curricular Activities here at Sheldon requires students to have good attendance?

Our 90% Attendance Rate goal may seem high to some, but it builds a cushion to make sure your student is able to meet the 80% threshold required for coming to events and participating in other activities here at Sheldon. A big part of being a student here in the Sheldon Community means being here for the big events, but it’s just as important to be here for the day-to-day.  Parents can help their students plan for these milestones by making sure they are setting good habits early in the year and thinking ahead of time while there’s still room for improvement.

If you’d like to keep an eye on your student’s attendance make sure you have registered for ParentVue to help them stay on track!  Remember that calls home only cover absences, but those tardies can add up too. ParentVue is a great resource to help parents monitor their student's progress.

Homecoming means dressing with class but the first step is being in class!  And, don’t be too tardy so you can come to the party!
Go Irish!

Principal
Sheldon High School

Attendance

Requests to excuse absences must be received within 48 hours of the absence. If your student will miss 3 or more days of school due to a planned reason, use the Pre-arranged Absence Form available in the Attendance Office or on the Sheldon Website.
Our bell schedule makes attendance crucial for students' academic success and it's extremely important they attend bell to bell. We are seeing a number of students in the building, but not attending their whole classes. We want to remind you that we have multiple codes for attendance:
  • Arriving to class marked VL (very late)
  • Leaving early without permission, or asking to leave early for another reason
  • Missing class entirely
Attendance Reporting Form

ParentSquare

As a reminder, families can excuse their students' unplanned absences electronically as the district has moved attendance notifications to ParentSquare starting this school year.

Please note: You cannot reply directly to a notification email or text to excuse an absence. Family members must be registered in ParentSquare to send electronic attendance notes. To register, visit www.parentsquare.com/signin, and register using the email address or mobile phone number you provided your student's school.

ParentVue

As you look at your student’s attendance in ParentVue please ask your student about any attendance codes that may be coming up. If you need help signing up for ParentVue please do not hesitate to call Sheldon High School and we can help set that up for you.

Class Deadline

The Deadline to drop a class without a mark on your transcript is Tuesday, October 6th! Starting October 7th,  a WD for 'Withdrawal' or a WF for 'Withdrawal While Failing' will be added for a dropped Semester 1 class.

Class drop forms are available with school counselors.  Parent/guardian permission is required, and textbooks/materials/calculators need to be returned promptly.

PSAT / MNSQT and SAT for Grades 11 and 12

Sheldon is offering the PSAT/MNSQT to Grade 11 and the SAT to Grade 12 during the school day on Oct. 23rd.

See attached student study guides for each exam:

SCAM ALERT!

We have been made aware of a phone scam involving the PSAT. Callers are contacting families and asking for credit card information to pay for testing materials, claiming the charge will be refunded after testing.

This is a scam. Do not provide your credit card or payment information.

Please be cautious if you receive a call like this. Sheldon High School and 4J will not call families requesting credit card information for PSAT testing materials. The district is aware of the scam and has reported it to law enforcement.

Device Care: Parent Help Needed to Save District Funds

4J's ongoing funding shortage is driving a major outreach to families this year around student technology use in classrooms.

The school district has always fully covered the cost of student technology device repair and replacement. Costs for this work have skyrocketed since 2020, when all students have been issued devices. With district financial reserves depleted, the district will run out of money to pay for device repair and replacement early this fall. Educators are asking parents—and students—to be aware of, and help reinforce, the proper care of devices so that repair and replacement is needed less.

This fall, schools are sending home technology use agreements for all parents to read and sign, to make them aware of how these tools are used in instruction and the expectations for students to care for them. Students will also receive care guides for their devices such as iPads and laptops.

"We can't immediately shift our instructional model to only using shared devices in the classroom," Superintendent Miriam Mickelson said. "Since we will need to continue supplying students during this year, we have no option but to continue repair and replacement as needed. But every dollar the district can save on tech repair matters when we are looking at more budget cuts."

Interested in Volunteering here at Sheldon?

We'd love to have your help! Our ambition this year is to assemble a regularly updated list of volunteers to assist with day-to-day needs here at Sheldon. Some of these people are parents, former staff members, and/or community members, all people like you!

So far, we have been getting started on planning with groups in the area to find ways folks can help. These are team efforts: Food Boxes or Food Drives, Clothing Drives, Personal Care Drives, Collecting for Prize Wheel Prizes, Prepping Staff Meals for specific events, Clothing Sorting.

What we would like to offer soon are some smaller opportunities for Individual Volunteering: Folks like yourself that might have 1-3 hours at a time to come in and help in small assignments throughout the building. There are some areas which can ALWAYS use a regular, ongoing volunteer to help (such as the Front Office greeting and answering phones). There are sometimes opportunities for projects that might last a few days or a couple of weeks (such as in the College and Career Center organizing materials and signups for specific scholarship opportunities). We would love to have a people standing daily at the various points of entry to the building to welcome students as they come in for the day or back from Lunch.

Our goal is to welcome volunteers in various areas, even sometimes for just one or two days at a time to, to see if certain tasks are a good fit and try to pair people who are helpful with the students and staff who could really use the help.

All volunteers will need to go through our 4J Volunteer Application so if you haven't already done so, that will be your first step. The application only takes about 5 minutes and the clearance usually takes about a week or two to get an email response back.  https://4j.lane.edu/volunteers

Once you have completed that, send me an email (at Higgs_L@4j.lane.edu) letting me know that you would like to join our building volunteer team and if there is a specific task or role that you have in mind! We can start by getting together for a brief Introduction to Volunteering meeting here at SHS (usually 30 minutes to an hour, one-on-one or in a small group).

We are already slowly growing a small crew of recurring volunteers who have joined us this year on a regular basis and I can't wait to have more community support join us in our building!

Thank you all for your willingness to help our kids and GO IRISH!
