At Sheldon High School, we want every student to feel connected, supported, and successful. One of the most important ways we can help make that happen is also one of the simplest: being at school. This year, we are encouraging every student to attend school at least 90% of the time. When students are here consistently, they have more opportunities to learn, build relationships with teachers and friends, participate in activities, access support, and stay on track toward graduation.
What does 90% attendance look like? Over a 170-day school year, it means missing about 17 days or fewer. Missing just 1–2 days each month can quickly add up, which is why every day really does count. Regular attendance matters because students who are in school consistently are more likely to:
- Earn stronger grades and stay on track academically.
- Build meaningful relationships with teachers, staff, and peers.
- Participate in athletics, activities, CTE, dual credit, and other opportunities.
- Stay on track for graduation and future college and career goals.
- Feel connected, engaged, and supported as part of their school community.
We also understand that students sometimes need to miss school. Illness, appointments, family circumstances, and other challenges happen. Our goal is not to make students or families feel badly about an absence. Instead, we want to work together to reduce avoidable absences and provide support when something is getting in the way of a student being at school.
Our Student Success Framework reminds us of the connection:
BELONG → ENGAGE → ATTEND → LEARN → GRADUATE
Attendance is an important part of that journey. When students show up, they give themselves more opportunities to learn, connect, and move toward their goals. Please help us encourage your student to aim for 90% attendance or better this year. If there is something making regular attendance difficult, please reach out. We want to partner with you and help.
Thank you for helping us make every day count at Sheldon High School.
