Sheldon Weekly Update

Posted Date: 10/27/24 (09:01 AM)

Students and Families,

Next week marks the last week of October. The school year is quickly zipping past us. It is hard to believe that we have been in school for two months already. Next week we have a standard alternating A/B schedule. As a reminder you can access the school calendar by using the following link: 2024/25 A/B Schedule.

I also want to take a moment to highlight the variety of services and resources available at Sheldon High School to support our students' academic, social, and emotional needs.

Academic Support
Our commitment to high-quality instruction extends beyond the classroom. In addition to a diverse range of teaching methods, including collaborative projects, hands-on learning, and digital tools, we offer an After-School Program on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays until 4:45 p.m. This program features licensed teachers who provide targeted academic support to help students succeed.

Equity and Inclusion
We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where every student feels a sense of belonging. Sheldon High School hosts nine affinity groups, including the Asian and Pacific Islander Student Union, Black Student Union, Latinx Student Union, Jewish Student Union, Disability and Divergence Alliance, Feminist Student Union, Native American Student Union, Gender Sexuality Alliance and the Women of Color Advocacy Group. These groups play a key role in promoting inclusivity and community. Our Equity Specialist, Alma Reyes Guillen (reyesguillen_a@4j.lane.edu), is available to meet with families to ensure students have access to the resources they need.

Mental Health and Wellness
Student well-being is a top priority, and we offer extensive mental health resources. Through partnerships with local agencies, we provide on-campus and virtual counseling services. These include crisis services through Hoots (Helping Out Our Teens in Schools), counseling four days a week from the Oregon Social Learning Center, and support from our 4J social worker, who is on campus three days a week. Additionally, we’ve partnered with Connected Lane County to provide resource navigation services, helping students find support both within the school and in the community. Our building offers a suicide provention group ACT that works to educate students when a friend is in crisis it is important that the students Acts, Cares, and Tells a caring adult. Student-led programs like Sources of Strength and Sheldon Strong also contribute to a positive and supportive school climate.

Basic Needs
Sheldon students have access to nutritious meals provided by 4J District Nutrition Services, including breakfast before school, a Second Chance Breakfast after first period, lunch, and an end-of-day meal that’s ideal for students participating in after-school activities.

Students can also visit our Clothing Boutique for new and gently used clothing items such as pants, shirts, coats, and shoes, all free of charge. Additionally, our student-run food pantry offers snacks throughout the day and provides backpacks of food for students to take home.

Parent and Family Engagement
We value strong partnerships with families and offer in-person and virtual meetings, as well as individual parent/student conferences. Our Equity specialist is available to advocate for students and families.  Our new website and twice-monthly newsletters help keep everyone informed. The principal’s letters also provide updates on school-wide successes and important information.

If you have any questions or need assistance with any of these services, please don't hesitate to reach out. We look forward to working together to ensure a successful school year for all our students.

Warm regards,

Mike Ingman
