Graduation Plans: Celebrating the Class of 2020

Congratulations to the Class of 2020. We want to recognize and honor our graduates in a way that truly celebrates your many accomplishments throughout your K–12 school experience, and wishes you well on the next phase of your journey.

Instead of choosing between celebrating seniors’ accomplishments with a non-traditional recognition now or a traditional event later, our district has decided to do both: We will produce a virtual graduation ceremony and celebrate seniors in other ways now, at the end of the school year, and hold a traditional in-person graduation ceremony at a later point, once social distancing requirements have been lifted and group gatherings can be held.

Delayed Traditional Ceremony

Once social distancing requirements have been lifted and we can safely hold large events, we will hold a traditional commencement ceremony for our 2020 graduates who wish to participate. This may be possible as soon as August, or may need to come later. We will communicate with Class of 2020 students and families about determining the best time once we have more information about the possibility of holding large-scale social events.

Virtual Ceremony

Our virtual graduation ceremony will follow the look and feel of our traditional Sheldon High School ceremony, including speeches from the principal and students as well as student performances. Each graduate’s name will be read by one of our chosen teachers, accompanied by a picture and quote selected by the student. The graduation presentation will be streamed online at an announced time and will remain on our school website for six months, free and available for all friends and family members near and far to watch. The Virtual Ceremony will be launched in mid-June, around the same time that we had originally planned for graduation. Seniors that want to be involved in graduation should watch their email for a message from Mr Voss explaining the process to audition to be a student speaker or performer.

Other Celebrations

Senior Signs: Thanks to our school district for creating yard signs free of charge for every 12th grade student to display on their lawn, front door or window, to show that an amazing 4J high school senior lives there. Sheldon did the first round of sign distribution at the school from 1:00-5:00 on Friday, May 8th. Moving forward we are planning on having lawn signs available for Seniors during lunch pick up between 11:00-12:00pm each day.

Be the Light: Each Friday through June 12, starting at 8:20 p.m. (20:20 in 24-hour time) for 20 minutes and 20 seconds, we are turning on our stadium lights and encourage families and community members to turn on your front porch lights or other lights as well, to shine some light for our high school seniors.

Seniors, we are so excited to be celebrating you! We want you to know how proud we are of all of you. We are committed to acknowledging and celebrating your hard work and learning success, and giving you and your families multiple ways to celebrate this important life event.

Congratulations, graduates!
