Updated Graduation Principal’s Letter- June 8, 2021

June 8, 2021

Students and Parents/Guardians/Family Members,

Once again, I want to send out information regarding Graduation. While I hope that people do not feel that I have communicated too much, please understand I realize many people miss communication from the school. Graduation is an event that is important enough; I do not feel it is wrong to over-communicate.

As we talk about graduation, one part can be confusing. Please remember that we have two schools within Sheldon: Sheldon Classic and International High School (IHS). Sheldon Classic includes all of the students that attend at Sheldon, while the IHS students will have an additional virtual graduation ceremony for their school within a school.

Thursday, June 10:

Virtual Graduation

Sheldon High School will hold a virtual graduation honoring all graduating seniors in the school. The Virtual Graduation is the official commencement for the class of 2021, as it will be available to all graduating seniors and their families.

The Virtual Graduation for all Sheldon graduates will be live-streamed on Thursday, June 10 at 6:30 pm. The IHS Virtual Graduation will be live-streamed at 7:00 pm. These ceremonies will be available to watch not only on the night of June 10th, but for many months in the future as well. There is no limit on spectators, and families and friends can watch from any location.

For Sheldon’s Virtual Graduation there will be multiple speakers and performers from the Class of 2021 and from the building and district leadership. All of our graduating seniors will be honored, with their picture being shown while their name is read. Graduates have uploaded their pictures and quotes and the company that produces the event has everything ready for this event.

Friday, June 11:

IHS In person Ceremony:

This is the first of the live ceremonies. Sheldon students that are involved in International High School will have their in person ceremony on this night. IHS students, please refer to information that has come out from IHS about what you will need to do on this day.

Wednesday, June 16:

All Sheldon In person Ceremony

I know the set up for an in person ceremony that does not take place at the Hult Center is new for many people in the Sheldon community. Therefore, I have created a short video so you can see the general layout and of what the ceremony grounds will look like: https://www.loom.com/share/2d5ec469b196476bbe0ffa1bf48b42d7

Each graduate will be able to invite four guests. Parties of guests are asked to maintain proper social distance from other parties of guests and while masks will not be required for students, staff or guests, anyone who wishes to wear one is invited to do so. Graduates will get their tickets at rehearsal, which will take place the afternoon of the in person event. Attendance at the rehearsal is mandatory a) to take part in the in-person ceremony and b) to get tickets for guests to attend.

Important times on June 16th:

1:30 pm: Required Rehearsal

As in years past, in preparation for the in person ceremony, Sheldon will hold a required rehearsal for seniors the same day as the evening event. Students do not need to wear cap and gown during the rehearsal. Ceremony tickets will be distributed at the rehearsal, and it is important that students attend in order to participate in the evening ceremony. Each graduate will receive four tickets for that evening’s event.

5:30 pm: Seniors arrive for the ceremony.

Seniors will line up on the football field, inside the track and behind the Dennis Ludwig football stadium. Due to limited parking, seniors will need to either park at Monroe Middle School or be dropped off so parking can be available for families attending the event. We will be running buses from Monroe starting at 4:45 pm and running until 5:30 pm to get students to Sheldon from Monroe.

6:30 pm: In person Ceremony

The ceremony will happen at Dennis Ludwig Stadium at Sheldon High School. The parking lot will open for cars at 5:00 pm and the gates to the stadium will open at 5:30 pm. Seating can NOT be claimed/saved/reserved prior to the opening of the gates.

A link to a live broadcast of all events during the live ceremony will be posted on the Sheldon High School website so people who cannot attend, or obtain a ticket, will be able to watch the in-person ceremony and take part in this important rite of passage.

Respectfully,

Here are some important updates and reminders for seniors as we end the school year and prepare for graduation ceremonies, both in-person and virtual. Here are dates and reminders that are important for all:

Thursday, June 10: Seniors’ Last Day of classes. Virtual Graduation will be posted on the Sheldon High School website at 6:30 pm. The International High School graduation will be available on the Sheldon Website on this night as well. This is a recorded event that will remain on the website for the next several months so people can watch and rewatch as they desire.

Friday, June 11: This is the first of the in-person ceremonies. Sheldon students involved in International High School, will have their in-person ceremony on that night. IHS students, please refer to information that has come out from IHS about what you will need to do on this day.

Wednesday, June 16:

  • 9:00am – 11:00am: Laptop and Textbook return at the Auditorium Lobby
  • 1:30pm: REQUIRED Rehearsal As in years past, in preparation for in-person ceremony, Sheldon will hold a required rehearsal for seniors the same day as the ceremony. Students do not need to wear cap and gown during the rehearsal. Graduation tickets will be distributed at the rehearsal and it is important that students attend in order to participate in the ceremony. Each graduate will receive four tickets for that evening’s event.
  • 5:30pm: Seniors should be on site for commencement NO LATER than 5:30 pm. Seniors will line up on the football field, inside the track and behind Dennis Ludwig football stadium. Due to limited parking, seniors will need to either park at Monroe Middle School or be dropped off so that parking can be available for families attending the event. We will be running buses from Monroe starting at 4:45 pm and running until 5:30 pm to get students to Sheldon from Monroe.
  • 6:30pm: In-person Ceremony at Dennis Ludwig Stadium at Sheldon High School. The parking lot will open for cars at 5:00 pm and the gates to the stadium will open at 5:30 pm. Seating can NOT be claimed/saved/reserved prior to the opening of the gates.

CAPS AND GOWNS: Seniors will be able to decorate their caps, if they so choose. All cap decorations must be school-appropriate and only 2-dimensional (no building up or out). No decorations should stick up on top or hang below the mortarboard. Mortarboards should be worn parallel to the ground. We will have extra caps available should your student come with a cap that has three-dimensional decoration or if the decorations are deemed inappropriate for the graduation event.

Graduation gowns must be worn correctly, with fronts fully zipped over school appropriate clothing. School staff will be prepared to help students make sure their
gowns will allow them to follow this rule. If there are problems, please let someone know as soon as is possible.

Honor cords, stoles, medals, and pins are provided through the school or district and must be approved by the school administration. Culturally-significant regalia are also permitted. Culturally-significant regalia include ceremonial accessories or attire that are significant to the graduate’s culture as a whole and appropriate to that culture’s traditional rites of passage. This does not include items that are of personal significance to the graduate. Students are encouraged to address any questions regarding cap, gown, or graduation with administrators prior to graduation event.

We will be providing more specific information about the in-person rehearsal and commencement next week.

Thanks,

Mike Ingman

May 25, 2021

Students and Parents,

We have some exciting news for our 2021 Graduates. While the information for the Virtual Graduation has stayed the same, there are some exciting changes to the In-person Ceremony. I want to be clear that the changes in the live event will not change anything about the Virtual Graduation happening on June 10th. In order to show that clarity, I have included the same information about the Virtual Graduation as I sent in the last email, with the change to the In-person Ceremony below it.

Please look for the major changes to the live event to appear in RED below.

Virtual Graduation – All remains the same from our last message

Sheldon High School will hold a virtual graduation honoring all graduating seniors in the school. The Virtual Graduation is considered the official commencement of the class of 2021, as it will be available to all graduating seniors and their families.

The Virtual Graduation for all Sheldon graduates will be live-streamed on Thursday, June 10 at 6:30. The IHS Virtual Graduation will be live-streamed at 7:00. These ceremonies will be available to watch not only on the night of June 10th, but for many months in the future as well. There is no limit on spectators, and families and friends can watch from any location.

For Sheldon’s Virtual Graduation there will be multiple speakers and performers from the Class of 2021. There will also be short remarks from our superintendent, the school board, and the building principal. All of our graduating seniors will be honored, with their picture being shown while their name is read. Graduates have uploaded their pictures and quotes and we are working to put that information together for the company that produces the event.

(Please remember that we have two schools within Sheldon: Sheldon Classic and International High School (IHS). Sheldon Classic includes all of the students that are in attendance at Sheldon, while the IHS students will have an additional virtual graduation ceremony for their school within a school.)

In-person Ceremony – significant changes below in RED

As a result of increased vaccination rates in our community, changes in guidance from the Oregon Department of Education, and changes in guidance from the State of Oregon, we are pleased to announce we are now able to plan for a single, in-person event for all graduates this year at Sheldon, These changes are also in line with expressed desires from many students and families, and we are pleased about these developments.

Sheldon is planning ONE outdoor, in-person ceremony. Graduates will be appropriately socially distanced in Dennis Ludwig Stadium at all times. This will be true of students seated during the ceremony as well as when they cross the stage to pick up their diploma. Graduates and guests will need to stay at least 6 feet apart during the ceremony.

This event will happen regardless of the weather conditions (rain or shine). The only weather related condition that could change this event is the unlikely situation where there is lightning.

Each graduate will be able to invite four guests. Please know that parties of guests will be asked to maintain proper social distance from other parties of guests and while masks will not be required for students, staff or guests, anyone who wishes to wear one is invited to do so.

Graduates will get their tickets at rehearsal, which will take place the morning of the in-person event. Attendance at the rehearsal is mandatory to:

  1. be able to take part in the in-person ceremony and
  2. be able to get the tickets for guests to attend.

The Sheldon in-person events will happen on the dates as follows:

  • June 11 – IHS only live ceremony @ Sheldon HS 6:30
  • June 16 – SHS all student live ceremony @ Sheldon HS @ 6:30

A link to a live broadcast of all events during the live ceremony will be posted on the Sheldon High School website so people who cannot attend, or obtain a ticket, will be able to watch the in-person ceremony and take part in this important rite of passage.

My hope is that this message helps to alleviate the stress of uncertainty around graduation. We will continue to get you more information as we receive it.

Respectfully,

Mike Ingman
